The awareness of cloth combining physical and emotional
aspects and total sensual involvement is something I explore in my textile
pieces, which invite involvement from the viewer.
I see the relationship between cloth and the human body,
movement and personal space a connecting thread of my work. The idea of using
thread and textile process as a metaphor to communicate my thoughts and develop
my ideas is one, which I am continually pursuing.
I have a fascination for manipulation of fabrics to produce
textural compositions that ultimately raise the fabric from the plane, my
relationship with textiles stems from the many hours spent as a child with my
grandmother and sisters during school holidays where activities were often
borne from creating things from something that had a previous life. Outgrown
jumpers were unwound and worked into something else, squares were knitted and
stitched together to form a blanket or cushion cover, buttons unpicked and
fabric reused, tablecloths embroidered and embellished. Creativity and
imaginative use of materials were both encouraged and exampled in Grandma
Barbara’s eccentric creations and collaborative family projects. The emotions
conveyed through the sensual involvement with fabric can still be recalled
today. These textures – the acquisition of skills was an integral part of the
process and now embedded in my memory.
Surface alteration, movement and tactile experience which
enable us to be physically and emotionally stimulated, enforce the association
of cloth with comfort through its textural qualities. The relationship with a
favourite article of clothing and how we relate to the fabric for sensory
feedback is observed within my work. Within this is the expression of my belief
that textiles in out lives are our cloth companions, our friends and
comforters.
